†¢ What would you do with Mary? When Mary first approaches me, as a worker, it will be important to arrange for an interpreter to assist Mary in explaining her situation. As English is her second language, she may be more comfortable talking about her experience in her native language and a good interpreter is a key element in empowering her in the process. However, care should be taken while enlisting an interpreter to ensure that the interpreter is unknown to the family and will not breach confidentiality by relating Mary’s situation to other members of her community. Given that she and her husband are well known in their community, this could potentially be a social embarrassment for Mary. She will need to undergo a risk assessment in order to determine the level of risk to her safety and the need to apply for an Interim Intervention Order and/or a Personal Safety Intervention Order, if she chooses to apply for an Intervention Order (henceforth referred to as IO) against Richard. This risk assessment will be based on his history of abusive behaviour, the future risk of him being abusive and the threat posed to Mary and the children. These factors will play an important in determining our future course of action. i.e. if Mary needs to apply for an IO, safety plans for herself and the children where she continues to live with him and in the event that she chooses to leave him.
